Um Ali
A delicious Middle Eastern dessert made with layers of puff pastry soaked in sweet custard and topped with roasted nuts for a crunchy finish. Perfect for any occasion!
Makes:
- 12 portions
Ingredients:
- 8 baked puffed pastry pieces or 1 sheet
- Toasted nuts as desired
For milk mixture:
- 5 cups liquid milk
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp cardamom
- 1 tsp vanilla essence from Foster Clark’s
- Pinch of salt
For custard:
- 1 Tbsp custard powder from Foster Clark’s
- 2-3 Tbsps sugar (depending on taste)
- 250ml milk
Preparation:
- 1. Bake puffed pastry according to package instructions, crush in pieces and place in the baking dish and top with nuts.
- 2. Prepare custard separately by combining 1 Tbsps of custard powder and 2-3 Tbsps of sugar with 6 Tbsps of milk.
- 3. Add this mixture to the remaining milk and stir on high heat for 5 mins. Bring to boil gently until the mixture thickens.
- 4. Prepare milk mixture and bring to boil.
- 5. Pour milk mixture over puffed pastry then cover with custard.
- 6. Decorate with nuts.
- 7. Bake at 200℃ for 15 mins then broil (max 10min) until slightly brown
